What RCD Testing Is
Short answer: RCD testing checks that each safety switch cuts the power when it should. A safety switch protects you, cutting power in a fraction of a second if current leaks somewhere it should not. A circuit breaker is different: it protects the wiring from overload.
Every safety switch has a TEST button, which a circuit breaker does not. A licensed electrician's test goes further than the button and records the result.
Testing As Part Of Maintenance
For businesses and sites we run RCD testing and periodic verification as part of scheduled electrical maintenance, quarterly, bi-annual or annual, with switchboard thermal scanning on the same visit. You get a maintenance report for your compliance documentation.
When A Safety Switch Is Missing Or Failing
NT WorkSafe requires safety switches when new circuits are added or major repairs are carried out on a board (Electrical Safety Act 2022 and Electrical Safety Regulations 2024). If your board has none, RCDs can sometimes be added without a full replacement; otherwise they go in with a switchboard upgrade.
If a safety switch keeps tripping, see why a safety switch keeps tripping.

Questions Alice Springs customers ask
What is RCD testing?
A check that each safety switch (RCD) cuts the power when it should, recorded by a licensed electrician. We do it as a one-off or as part of scheduled maintenance with a written report.
Is a safety switch the same as a circuit breaker?
No. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects people, cutting power in a fraction of a second on earth leakage.
How do I tell a safety switch from a circuit breaker?
A safety switch has a TEST button. A circuit breaker does not.
Can a safety switch be added to my existing switchboard?
Sometimes, without a full replacement. If the board is too old or full, the safety switches go in with a switchboard upgrade.
