Safety Switch vs Circuit Breaker
A safety switch (RCD) and a circuit breaker live in the same switchboard and can look similar, but they protect different things. A circuit breaker protects the wiring, it trips on overload, too much current drawn for too long. A safety switch protects you, it detects earth leakage, current escaping somewhere it shouldn't, often through a person, and cuts power in a fraction of a second.
If something's tripped, the first thing worth checking is which one actually tripped. The fix is different for each, and it's usually obvious once you look: the safety switch has a TEST button, a circuit breaker doesn't.
What To Do Right Now
Unplug Everything On The Circuit
Physically unplug every appliance and device on the affected circuit, not just switch them off at the wall.
Reset The Safety Switch, Once
Flick it back on. Once. If it trips again immediately with nothing plugged in, stop, don't keep flicking it, that's a fault in the fixed wiring or the switch itself, not an appliance.
Won't Hold? Call A Licensed Electrician
If it won't reset at all, or trips straight away again, stop resetting it and call us rather than keep trying.
Holds? Find The Culprit
Plug appliances back in one at a time. The one that trips it again is your faulty item, leave it unplugged and get it checked or repaired before using it again.

Common Causes In Alice Springs
- A faulty appliance, hot water systems, washing machines, dishwashers and pool pumps with a failing heating element or motor are the usual suspects
- Moisture after rain, at outdoor power points, or an evaporative cooler connection
- Heat-damaged insulation, most common on 40°C+ days when a marginal connection finally gives up
- UV-aged outdoor fittings and cabling
- One safety switch covering too much of the house, so small leakage from several circuits adds up until it trips
- Rarely, the safety switch itself failing, which is exactly what the test button below is for
When To Stop Resetting
- It trips again immediately, before you've plugged anything back in
- It trips with everything on the circuit unplugged
- There's a burning smell or scorch marks anywhere near the board
- It's tripping regularly and nothing about your appliances has changed
Any one of these means stop and call us rather than keep testing it yourself.
The Test Button
Every safety switch has a TEST button, press it every three months or so. It should trip the switch immediately. If it doesn't, the safety switch may not actually protect you in a real fault, and testing it yourself is the only way anyone finds that out before it matters. If yours doesn't trip on test, call us.
What We Do When We Arrive
We find the actual earth leakage rather than guessing, isolating circuits and appliances one at a time until we find it, the same logic as the steps above but with test equipment. Depending on what we find, we'll fix the fault, repair or advise replacing the appliance, or recommend a Thermal Safety Check if the board's own connections might be running hot. If your board's old, full, or only has one safety switch covering the whole house, that's a switchboard upgrade conversation, not just a repair.

The NT Rule, In Short
In the Northern Territory, safety switches must be installed when new electrical circuits are added to a property, or when major repairs are carried out, and commercial and industrial switchboards must have them fitted. That's administered under NT WorkSafe, and as a Master Electricians Australia member we work to MEA's safety guidance on top of it. There's no blanket deadline we're aware of for retrofitting an existing home's board on its own, so if you're unsure where your property stands, ask us rather than go on a guess.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
Usually earth leakage from a faulty appliance, moisture at an outdoor point, or a heat-damaged connection. See the causes above for the full list. Working through the steps at the top of this page usually narrows it down.
Is it safe to keep resetting it?
Once, yes, that's the normal first step. Repeatedly, no. If it won't hold after one reset, or trips again immediately, stop and call us rather than keep flicking it.
Safety switch vs circuit breaker, what's the difference?
A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects you, cutting power in a fraction of a second if current leaks somewhere it shouldn't. They sit in the same switchboard and can look similar.
Can a faulty fridge or hot water system cause it?
Yes. Any appliance with a heating element or an ageing motor, hot water systems, washing machines, dishwashers and pool pumps included, is a common cause of earth leakage as it wears.
Does Alice Springs heat make this worse?
Yes. Heat is hard on electrical connections. A marginal connection that's fine in winter can heat up further in a 45°C roof space and start tripping once summer load hits.
Do I need a new switchboard or just a new safety switch?
Depends on the board's condition and how many safety switches it already has. Sometimes it's a straightforward add. If the board's old, full or otherwise due, a full switchboard upgrade makes more sense. An on-site look tells us which.
