Safety Switches (RCDs) And The Law
Under NT WorkSafe's rules, safety switches must be installed when new electrical circuits are added to a property, or when major repairs are carried out on an existing board (administered under the Electrical Safety Act 2022 and Electrical Safety Regulations 2024). If you're adding circuits for solar, a battery, a new kitchen or ducted aircon, bringing the board up to standard is part of the job.
A safety switch is not the same as a circuit breaker. A breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects you, cutting power in a fraction of a second if current leaks somewhere it shouldn't. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
It depends on the board, the number of circuits, and what we find behind it. An asbestos backing board or deteriorated consumer mains changes the job. We quote on site for free in town, and the quote is the price.
How long will my power be off?
Most domestic upgrades are a single day, with the power off for a good part of it. We will give you a realistic window before we start so you can plan around the fridge and the aircon.
Do I get a Certificate of Compliance?
Yes. Every switchboard upgrade we complete comes with a Certificate of Compliance, the legal record that the work was done to standard by a licensed electrician. Keep it. It's what protects you if you sell, lease, or need to show an insurer the work was done properly.
Can you just add safety switches to my existing board?
Sometimes. If there's room and the rest of the board is sound, we can add RCDs without a full replacement. If it's old, full, or already showing wear, we'll tell you honestly whether a patch is worth it or a full upgrade makes more sense.
I still have the old ceramic fuse board, is that dangerous?
Not automatically, but it doesn't trip the way a modern safety switch does, it just keeps feeding a fault until something gets hot. If yours is original to the house, it's worth a look, especially before summer.
Do you do switchboard upgrades outside Alice Springs?
Yes. We travel to remote communities, stations and roadhouses across Central Australia. For sites further out we usually quote from photos or satellite imagery first, then confirm on the day.
