A switchboard is the one part of a house nobody looks at until it fails. If yours still has ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or a board that trips for no obvious reason, it is worth a look before summer does it for you.

Signs Your Board Is Due

  • Ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • No safety switches (RCDs), or only one covering everything
  • The board trips when the aircon and oven run together
  • Scorching, discolouration or a warm board
  • A board so full there is no room to add a circuit
  • Buzzing, humming or a burning smell at the board
  • Asbestos backing board on an older home
  • You are adding solar, a battery, or ducted aircon

Why It Matters More Here

Alice Springs runs hard on its electrical infrastructure. Forty-plus degree days mean aircon running for months at a time, and a board designed for a 1970s house with one wall unit was never sized for that load. Heat is what ages a switchboard — connections expand, contract, and loosen, and a loose connection is what starts to cook.

That is also why we look at boards with a thermal camera. A loose or overheating connection shows up as a hot spot long before it fails, and finding it early is the difference between a repair and a replacement.

Safety Switches And The NT Rule

In the Northern Territory, safety switches must be installed when new electrical circuits are added to a property, or when major repairs are carried out. So an upgrade is often not optional — if you are adding circuits for solar, a battery, a new kitchen or ducted aircon, bringing the board up to standard is part of the job.

A safety switch is not the same as a circuit breaker. A breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects you, by cutting power in a fraction of a second when current leaks somewhere it should not — through a person, usually. Plenty of older Alice Springs homes have breakers and no RCD at all.

Every switchboard upgrade we complete comes with a Certificate of Compliance for the work. That certificate is what protects the homeowner — it is the record that the work was done to standard by a licensed electrician.

What An Upgrade Involves

Most domestic boards are a one-day job. We isolate the supply, remove the old board, install a new enclosure with circuit breakers and RCDs sized to your actual circuits, re-terminate and label everything, test every circuit, and hand over the certificate. Power is off while we work, and we will tell you honestly how long that will be before we start.

Commercial and industrial boards are their own thing — see our commercial electrician and industrial and remote pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on the board, the number of circuits, and what we find behind it — an asbestos backing board or deteriorated consumer mains changes the job. We quote on site for free in town, and the quote is the price.

How long will my power be off?

Most domestic upgrades are a single day, with the power off for a good part of it. We will give you a realistic window before we start so you can plan around the fridge and the aircon.

Do I legally need safety switches?

In the NT, safety switches must be installed when new circuits are added or major repairs are carried out. If you are adding solar, a battery, ducted aircon or a new kitchen circuit, it is part of the job rather than an extra.

Is a circuit breaker the same as a safety switch?

No. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects a person from electrocution by cutting power when current leaks to earth. Many older homes here have breakers and no safety switch at all.

Can you check my board without replacing it?

Yes. We can test the board, check the safety switches actually trip, and thermal-image the connections to find anything running hot. If it does not need replacing we will say so.

Tell Us What You Need

Two ways in, because a burst-pipe emergency and a planned rewire need different questions. Pick whichever fits — and for anything urgent, calling is always faster than typing.

Something's broken

Four details and three taps — that's it. If it's unsafe or you have no power at all, please just call 0438 478 116 — day or night. If we're out of mobile range on a remote job, text and we'll call you back.

If you can smell burning, see sparks, or there's water near power — don't wait for a call back. Switch the power off at the switchboard if it's safe to reach, and ring us now.

Faster still: call or text 0438 478 116 — 24/7 emergency service.

A quote, a project or an account

The more you tell us here, the more useful our first call is — on-site quotes around Alice Springs are free, with no call-out fee. Further out we quote from photos and satellite imagery first.

Optional. It helps us scope the job sensibly rather than guess — it isn't a price and we won't hold you to it.

A note on quotes: any price discussed by phone, quoted on-site, or given as a rough figure is an estimate based on what we can see and what you've told us. It becomes a firm quote once we've confirmed the full scope of work — and if anything changes once we start (an unforeseen fault, extra materials, access issues), we'll explain it and agree the change with you before continuing.
