Why It Matters More Here
Alice Springs runs hard on its electrical infrastructure. Forty-plus degree days mean aircon running for months at a time, and a board designed for a 1970s house with one wall unit was never sized for that load. Heat is what ages a switchboard — connections expand, contract, and loosen, and a loose connection is what starts to cook.

Safety Switches And The NT Rule
In the Northern Territory, safety switches must be installed when new electrical circuits are added to a property, or when major repairs are carried out. So an upgrade is often not optional — if you are adding circuits for solar, a battery, a new kitchen or ducted aircon, bringing the board up to standard is part of the job.
A safety switch is not the same as a circuit breaker. A breaker protects the wiring from overload. A safety switch protects you, by cutting power in a fraction of a second when current leaks somewhere it should not — through a person, usually. Plenty of older Alice Springs homes have breakers and no RCD at all.
Every switchboard upgrade we complete comes with a Certificate of Compliance for the work. That certificate is what protects the homeowner — it is the record that the work was done to standard by a licensed electrician.
What An Upgrade Involves
Most domestic boards are a one-day job. We isolate the supply, remove the old board, install a new enclosure with circuit breakers and RCDs sized to your actual circuits, re-terminate and label everything, test every circuit, and hand over the certificate. Power is off while we work, and we will tell you honestly how long that will be before we start.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
It depends on the board, the number of circuits, and what we find behind it — an asbestos backing board or deteriorated consumer mains changes the job. We quote on site for free in town, and the quote is the price.
How long will my power be off?
Most domestic upgrades are a single day, with the power off for a good part of it. We will give you a realistic window before we start so you can plan around the fridge and the aircon.
Do I legally need safety switches?
In the NT, safety switches must be installed when new circuits are added or major repairs are carried out. If you are adding solar, a battery, ducted aircon or a new kitchen circuit, it is part of the job rather than an extra.
Is a circuit breaker the same as a safety switch?

Can you check my board without replacing it?
