What Alice Springs heat, dust and rain do to a solar system

- Heat lowers output
- Silicon solar cells typically lose about 0.4% to 0.5% of their power for every degree Celsius above their 25°C test temperature (PVEducation, effect of temperature). Your panel's datasheet gives its own figure as the temperature coefficient of power. Worked through, a cell running 40°C above 25°C gives up roughly 16% to 20% of its rated power. Mounting with an air gap behind the panels, so they shed heat, is part of the design.
- Inverters cut back when hot
- Most inverters reduce their own output when they get too hot, to protect themselves. An inverter on a west-facing wall in full afternoon sun can do that on the days you want it most. Where it goes, in shade with room to breathe, matters as much as which one you buy.
- Dust stays until it rains
- Rain is what rinses dust off the glass, and Alice Springs averages 283 mm a year over about 29 days with 1 mm or more (Bureau of Meteorology, same station). A dry winter or a dust storm can leave a film for weeks. Watching your inverter's daily figures is the simplest check: a slow slide with no cloud to blame is usually dirt or a fault.

- Cables, connectors, conduit and rooftop DC isolators sit in strong sun all year and age faster than gear in cooler places. A periodic inspection looks at exactly those parts, and a thermal camera shows a loose connection as a hot spot while it still looks fine.
Cleaning: follow your panel maker's instructions. Clean in the cool of the early morning, never a hot panel, and stay off the roof unless you are equipped for heights. If output has dropped and cleaning does not bring it back, that is a maintenance and fault finding job.

How often should a solar system be inspected?
Once a year, or as part of a predictive maintenance plan. A yearly inspection covers a thermal scan of the DC connections and isolators, a check of performance against what the system should be producing, and fault diagnosis if something is off. Inspect sooner if output has dropped and a clean did not fix it.
