Larapinta is one of the more spread-out suburbs on this side of town, taking in the country near the start of the Larapinta Trail. The suburb's name comes from Lhere Apirnte, the Arrernte name for the Finke River. Blocks here tend to run larger than the inner suburbs, which usually means more roof area for solar, more sheds and outbuildings on their own circuits, and longer cable runs from the switchboard to the back of the block.

Being on the western fringe, Larapinta properties cop the same 45°C summers and red dust as the rest of Alice Springs, but the extra distance from town means a fault left to run gets more expensive to fix, not less. Dust ingress into an ageing switchboard, or a safety switch that won't reset, are among the calls we get most from this side of town. Larapinta also takes in some of the largest standard residential lots in Alice Springs, and bigger blocks are where we see the most owner-added extras build up over the years. A workshop here, a granny flat there, a pump for a bore or a header tank feeding the garden. Every one of those is another sub-circuit that needs its own properly rated protection, not just tapped off the nearest existing point because it was convenient at the time. Being close to the start of the Larapinta Trail also means a few properties see visitors or short-stay guests through the cooler months, which is exactly when a tired switchboard gets tested hardest.
